How to Install MIUI Theme MTZ File Manually
This tutorial will guide you to a fully-working workaround on installing MIUI theme downloaded from third-party sources by manually importing a .mtz file on a Xiaomi device without root access. This feature was previously available by default through the Themes manager app. Unfortunately, Xiaomi has decided to disable this feature since the release of MIUI 9.5 but makes it available exclusively only for registered Designer accounts. It means that common users are not able to import any .mtz file directly via the app. That leaves the users with browsing and downloading themes available in Themes Store as the only option. However, some of the Themes available there are not frequently updated to its latest version.
Themes from third-party not supported error: Download|Auth rejected: 402
A non-registered Designer account (let's say it as ordinary user) would get an error message when trying to import a .mtz file. There was an old trick by utilizing Mi Theme Editor app. Unluckily, the trick becomes obsolete because Xiaomi has managed to, again, patch the Themes manager app. Hence, users can now import the repacked MTZ file but they still won't be able to apply the imported theme file.
Enter Mi Rape app! A new app that is capable to unpack, repack, and apply any MIUI theme downloaded from third-party sources. This article shows you exactly how to use the app on your phone.
Preparation
Step 1 – Browse and download the .mtz file(s) of any MIUI theme you desired. Check our dedicated Themes section as well.
Step 2 – Usually, the downloaded .mtz file is saved automatically in the "Download" folder in your phone. Open up the File Manager app and located the .mtz file.
Step 3 – Now tap and hold on the file name until some additional options appear. Then tap on the More.. button, then Rename.
Rename the file name extension from .mtz to .zip and you can leave its original name as it is.
Step 3 – Now you have a new .zip file which is basically still the MIUI theme you have downloaded. Next, tap on that .zip file (just tap it – NOT tap and hold). It will reveal other options. Choose "Extract here". You will then notice a new folder is created.

Steps to Import Third-party Themes on MIUI 9
Step 1 – Download the Mi Rape .apk file from this page directly on your phone.
Step 2 – The download process should finish in few seconds. Once done, locate the downloaded .apk file.
Step 3 – Now install the .apk file. You may need to enable "installation from unknown sources" option if you haven't do so. Once installed, tap "Open" to launch the app.
Step 4 – Tap the three dots at the top right-hand corner of the screen and choose "New Project".
Step 5 – Fill in all details with any details you want. However, we strongly suggest that you keep original details from the theme's developer to give a proper respect and credit. Otherwise, never share the repacked theme file and use it for your own.
Step 6 – Next, tap on the newly created project to reveal additional menus. Then choose "Edit Project".
Step 7 – Again, tap on the three dots at the top corner then choose "Import File" option.
Step 8 – Locate the location of the theme folder you have previously extracted.
Step 9 – Tap the "Check All" button then scroll down the page a little bit. Find a name called "description.xml" and uncheck it (remove the tick mark / unselect it). Hit that "OK" button once done.
Step 10 – Similar to previous steps, tap the three dots at top corner again, then choose "Import Folder". Next, locate the theme folder and its wallpaper folder. Tap "OK" once done (see illustration below).

Step 11 – Now hit the back button on your phone or use navigation gesture to go back to the main menu of Mi Rape app.
Step 12 – Again, tap on the project name to reveal options. Choose "Pack to MTZ".
Step 13 – Finally, hit the "Apply" button to start applying the newly repacked MIUI theme file. Sit tight and wait for the app to process the task.
Congratulation, you have successfully repacked, imported, and applied MIUI theme downloaded from third-party source.
